Zoey Redbird - House of Night


"Night has chosen thee; thy death will be thy birth. Night calls to thee; hearken to Her sweet voice. Your destiny awaits you at the House of Night!"

Zoey Redbird was born Zoey Montgomery to Linda and Phillip Montgomery. Her father was a deadbeat who was never home, and rarely sent his child-support checks. Linda went through a succession of men before marrying John Heffer, the 'step-loser'. As a result of that marriage, Zoey was ostracized from her family, until the only family member she still considered family was Grandma Redbird. She spent several years dating her sometimes-boyfriend Heath Luck, and her best friend was Kayla.

She is a teenage girl of Cherokee ancestry on her grandmother's side. At the start of the series, she becomes a vampyre fledgling at the Tulsa House of Night. Zoey is blessed by the Goddess of Night personified, Nyx, with whom she speaks directly in dreams and in person. Zoey also has lace-like markings on her face, shoulders, back, waist, hands, and chest something that makes her stand out as a fledgling and if she becomes an adult vampire, as no adult vampire has marks like hers.

Zoey also has an affinity for all five of the elements (air, fire, water, earth, and spirit) and is said to be the first ever vampyre (including fledglings) to do so.

She is best friends with her House of Night roommate, Stevie Rae Johnson. She is also chosen by a cat, who reminds her of a lioness, and whom she therefore names Nala after the Lion King character of the same name. Zoey first dreamed of Nala, before seeing the orange cat stuck in a tree and rescuing her after a Dark Daughters meeting.

In Marked, she settles in at the House of Night and defeats Aphrodite for leadership of the exclusive school club, the Dark Daughters. In Betrayed, while she is dating Erik Night officially, she carries out secret relationships with Heath Luck (her human boyfriend from before she was Marked) and Loren Blake (a temporary poetry professor at the House of Night). She also discovers Neferet's evil ways.
